The Leadership Academy

The signature program of the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation is the Leadership Academy. Over the course of their junior year in high school, the Leadership Academy develops and teaches leadership skills and principles to metro Atlanta high school students by focusing on the areas of:
- Leadership;
- Critical Thinking;
- Entrepreneurship;
- Public Service and Civic Engagement
- College and Career Readiness.
The MJYF Leadership Academy provides a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable leadership experience and prepare for life after high school. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today's young leaders and, strengthen their understanding of leadership and community service.
Benefits of The Leadership Academy
Today, more than 330 metro Atlanta high school students have completed the MJYF Leadership Academy. More than 98 percent of the Leadership Academy alumni are either in college, gainfully employed, or serving in the military.
The Leadership Academy meets two Saturdays per month from October to June of each year. The semi-monthly meetings include speakers, hands-on experiences, cultural events, field trips, and travel opportunities.
Students in the Leadership Academy…
- Acquire the skills to become a leader in the community
- Participate in community service projects
- Prepare for college
- Participate in a three-day educational trip where they meet with elected officials and business leaders at prominent businesses, tour colleges and universities, and visit popular tourist sites.
- Earn a Leadership Academy Certificate upon completion of the program
How to Apply for The Leadership Academy
Students eligible to participate must be:
- 11th grade students, in good standing, enrolled in a high school in Atlanta Public Schools or metro Atlanta high schools (South Fulton and Clayton counties)
- Students who have shown leadership potential
- Students who are nominated by the principal, guidance counselor, or teacher at their school

My name is Cassandra Abioye and I was born in Springfield, IL. I was fortunate to have completed first through third grades in Brussels, Belgium and grades four through six in Dakar, Senegal. As a result I am bilingual, speaking both English and French. For the past two years I have attended Langston Hughes High School where I am a junior. My educational plan is to get accepted into the University of Chicago, Duke, or New York University. I would like to eventually obtain my doctorate degree in Business Marketing and Advertising.

My name is Montanez Baugh and I am a junior at Maynard H. Jackson High School. My prospects for college include the University of Michigan and the University of Texas at Austin in addition to several other schools with strong music programs. I am currently working on starting a music group with a very close friend. In addition to working on becoming a musician (mainly a harpist), I do plan to obtain a degree in music education (ultimately orchestral education) so that I can give back to the community through knowledge, wisdom, and charitable events.

My plans are to attend college out-of-state, but I am open to attending in-state colleges. My out-of- state college choices are university of Alabama, New York University, Xavier University, or Central Florida University. My in-state college choices are Columbus State University, Savannah State University, and the University of Georgia. Afterwards, I plan to attend medical school. I am aspiring to become an obstetrician because I love babies/kids. My second career choice would be a paramedic because I want to work in the medical field and help people. I also have an interest in becoming a social worker because as stated I love working with kids. As a hobby, I would like to plan weddings because I have a great imagination and I am very creative. It would be great if I could turn my wedding planning into a business. Whatever I become, I know I will be great at it.

My name is Caitlin Cooper and I attend Westlake High School where I am a junior. I am fifteen years old and my hobbies include fashion design, shopping, cooking, and hanging out with my friends. I am an only child and I live with my mother, Wendy, and my puppy, Blackie. I am a Christian girl with a relationship with God that allows me to stand out from the rest when with my peers. When I graduate from high school, I plan to go to college, earn a master's degree and study nursing. Some of the schools I am interested in attending are Spelman College, Claflin University, Florida A&M University, Albany State University, Oral Roberts University, and the University of Georgia. My top choice is Spelman College because it is a very prestigious college for women. When I graduate from college, I plan to become a nurse practitioner and specialize in pediatrics. One of the things that helped me to choose a career in nursing is the flexibility of my work hours so that I can always put my family first. What I am looking forward to more than anything after finishing school and starting my career is becoming a wife and mother.

My dream school is Georgetown University, but I would also love to attend Duke University, Howard University, Spelman College, Vanderbilt University, Hampton University, the University of Virginia, or Brown University. Having various language competencies to my advantage, I would love to possibly work in the field of Foreign Affairs. This would include traveling to my family's native land of Africa – specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo – to try and help resolve what conflicts I can. I would also love to become an International Financial Consultant, where I can also travel abroad, meet new people and learn new languages. My name is Mojid Salawu. I am a native of Nigeria where I lived with my parents and siblings. I had two siblings to pass away – one brother died shortly after birth and another brother from a brain disease. This event changed my life because I believe that the disease could have been cured however due to the inadequate technology in the country at the time my brother died. Ever since then I have wanted to help other people and give them the chances my brother never had. My family and I moved to the United States when I was at the age of eleven. It was a decision made by my father to better provide for the family. I am currently a junior at the South Atlanta High School of Computer Animation and Design. I plan to attend Morehouse College immediately after high school for my pre-med studies. After Morehouse I plan to apply to Emory to further my educational interest in medicine.
