MJYF Receives Grant from Kaiser to Focus on Student Health and Wellness

The Learn.Live.Lead. (L3) Challenge is a year-long initiative sponsored by Kaiser that will be implemented through the MJYF Leadership Academy (60+ high school students). It is a holistic approach to youth health by focusing on sexual health, nutrition, wellness and physical activity. This program will teach the importance of youth and families living healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and physical activity to prevent chronic illnesses. Additionally, participants will receive educational training on sexual health (preventing HIV, other STDs, & pregnancy).

During the L3 Challenge, youth will take a healthy lifestyle assessment; develop an individual three-year lifestyle plan, and make group health pledge. The pledge will be used to facilitate goals and activities for the L3 challenge in which MJYF Leadership Academy students will recruit other participants and organize group physical activities to engage community stakeholders. The winners of the challenge will receive a college scholarship, laptop computer, iPad and iPod.

MJYF is excited about receiving the grant from Kaiser and we look forward to helping to improve the health and wellness of our student leaders.

Jackmont Hospitality's T.G.I. Friday's Restaurants Raise Funds for MJYF

jackmont hospitality Jackmont Hospitality, a full-service foodservice company headquartered in Atlanta, hosted a series of exciting bartending competitions in the fall at their T.G.I. Friday's locations in search of the World Bartending Champion. For the "T.G.I. Friday's World Bartending Championship," the Jackmont T.G.I. Friday's locations held a series of competitions to validate their bartenders, at the store, NE regional (T.G.I. Friday's Greenbelt, MD) and SE regional (T.G.I. Friday's Camp Creek, Atlanta, GA) level. Winners emerging from the series then participated in the Franchise Divisional Competition in December at the T.G.I. Friday's in Greenbelt, MD. In addition to celebrating the top bartenders in the industry, the purpose of the World Bartending Championship is to bring attention to a worthy organization that has strong and deep roots in the community while raising funds to support their continued efforts. For the 2012 event, T.G.I. Friday's selected the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation (MJYF) as its franchise charity of choice. Proceeds raised from the championship events - in the amount of $25,000 - will benefit the mission and work of MJYF. With the help of their sponsor, Heineken USA, the Friday's restaurants were able to exceed their financial goal and made a $25,000 contribution to MJYF. The competitions were great team building experiences, allowing Friday's to continue to have the best bartenders in the industry and rally around a great cause, all while having a lot of fun.
