Those of us living in the first decade of the 21st century see challenges all around us: the fragile conditions of the earth's environment and our global economic viability; a nation facing the distinct possibility that our heirs will not live in conditions that are better or equal to past generations; and where more young black males are in prison than in college. In our local schools, close to 50% of students of color leave high school, without a high school diploma, and therefore are not positioned with skills for productive lives.
