While in China, students throughout the summer camp were able to participate in expanding their experience of Chinese culture. We as students were able to connect with other students who attend school and live in China. I was able to connect with Xingzha Kang, otherwise known as John. Connecting with John was very helpful in creating an environment that challenged me because communication is key. Even though John was very capable of speaking the English language, I challenged John to not allow me to say basic things in English. For example, when I wanted to go to the mall, I had to say maichang. John and I spent an entire 12 hours working through what it was that he did and some activities that I wanted to do. During the morning, I experienced Chinese students studying math (trigonometric functions). It was very interesting to see how they challenged themselves to learn more and more each time. After this we ate lunch with John’s family. The lunch consisted of noodles, chicken in many ways, and seafood. John’s mom was able to prepare the food for us and it was delicious. After lunch, we went to the mall. We were able to shop at the mall, and even saw a Chinese movie that was great. The movie was based on two characters named the chopstick brothers who became involved with the American mafia. The movie was intriguing through it’s many variations of musical selections. We then had dinner at Pizza Hut with other students from the Chinese bridge camp. Pizza Hut in China is very different in China, as that Chinese Pizza Hut is more comparable to Houston’s in Atlanta. After this great experience, I’ve learned that learning and laughter are universal.
