Alumni Spotlight

Once MJYF students graduate from our program there’s no stopping the limitless possibilities that awaits them. Whether it be studying in areas of science, art, literature or traveling the abyss, our alumni go out to accomplish great things and we’re dedicated to sharing their stories.

In this edition of our Alumni Spotlight, we’re shining light on Kamberly Tate.

MJYF Graduate Year: 2010

  • Can you tell us about yourself?

I am a 26-year-old scientist, healthcare professional and entrepreneur. I’m originally from Miami, but I was raised in Atlanta.

  • What inspires you?

The need for change in humanity inspires me. The ability for us all to reinvent ourselves and conquer new destinies everyday is what inspires me.

  • What profession are you currently in? How did you get to where you are today?

I am currently occupied with building my own business(es). I own mixed-use commercial property in Riverdale, Georgia, that I am currently licensing and renovating for my own endeavors as well as the ventures of other entrepreneurs. I arrived here through a very unconventional pathway but am being very intentional about all that is to come.

After graduating from Tri-Cities High School in East Point, GA, I attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biology. From there I attended Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, TN and earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery. A residency position in General Practice brought me back to Atlanta but life is full of the unexpected and leaps of faith so I took the opportunity to take a year to get my businesses off the ground before I return to the dental field in 2020.

  • What advice or guidance would you give to your younger self?

Explore. Different careers, places, people, ideas. It is perfectly fine to have a plan but even better to have flexibility and an open mind.

  • How did the MJYF impact you? Any advice you want to share with current MJYF students or prospective students applying for the program?

MJYF introduced me to some amazing like-minded individuals that I still keep in contact with and support presently. Advice that I would like to share is to treat this experience and the people you meet within MJYF as your tribe. Believe in, support and encourage them because they can become lifelong friends and colleagues. As we grow in age and in our various careers, the ecosystem we create can nourish or damage us, so start here with learning how to truly network and nurture relationships
