Each year our students are challenged with the task of writing a speech about any subject of their choosing. Prior to the big speech day, students attend a workshop on the elements of speech: defining an audience, speech variation, researching and analysis, persuasion tactics and more. During the workshop, we have open dialogue on memorable speeches in history and the courage to speak in front of others regardless of the audience’s size. At the end of the workshop, students are asked to prepare and recite a speech in front of the next class to enter into MJYF’s annual speech contest.
In 2019, we heard amazing speeches from students that covered a wide range of topics. It was astonishing to hear the social consciousness and reflective insights of these young bright minds. Ultimately, after careful deliberation and critiquing, we scored each speech and tallied the winnings to three students.
First Place: Khalil Edwards
Second Place: Amaya Davis
Third Place: Noni Vaughn
Congrats to all of the participants! We know this is only the beginning in crafting groundbreaking speeches.
